Beach Huts

Well it looks like Summer has finally arrived and we are enjoying the good weather here at Spirit. We have decorated our new garden studio with cheerful bunting (corporate colours of course!) and are enjoying the creativity and inspiration that working so close to nature brings. We've included a short item on the move into this new studio below and if you ever fancy a visit, do feel free to drop by (all we ask is that you let us know you are coming first)!

We're also getting that holiday vibe thanks to our most recent project of creating a website for a local company that offers vintage 1970's Volkswagen Camper Vans for hire. We might be trying that ourselves shortly as feel it would be fantastic accomodation for a short break!

In other news inspiration has come this year from Rachel attending art courses at local colleges with the aim of revisiting processes that create beautful work and do not rely on a computer to do so. It is very refreshing to get away from the computer screen once in a while, and to bring fresh creativity to a project.

So do enjoy reading and don't forget you can catch all the latest news on our website www.spiritcreative.co.uk and our blog site blog.spiritcreative.co.uk.

We are currently offering brand new set price stationery, website and logo packages on our website here. Call 01296 668747 to place your order now!!

Also, do feel free to check out our profile pages on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

  NEW GARDEN STUDIO   LETTERPRESS PRINTING

We've been conscious for some time now that working from home has it's distractions. It is also important to get out of a regular working environment once in a while to gain a fresh outlook and inspiration. We experimented with working at collaborative studios, in cafe bars etc which have all been successful in their own way. However this year we decided to settle on converting our summerhouse at home to a permanent office that we can fill with our favourite design equipment and inspirational things, also invite clients to. We have been in for 6 months now and it has been great. The view outside into our beautiful garden is excellent too! The most recent addition into the studio has been vintage letterpress printing machine which we aim to get up and running soon (see next article!).

So if you do want to come visit us in person, to learn more about us, graphic design, or have a look at our letterpress machine feel free. All we ask is that you let us know you are coming first!

Rachel has always had a passion for typography and older forms of printing technology so was pleased to see a short course at St Martins College, London, to be able to have a go at this now somewhat lost printing process. It was great to work with type in it’s physical form, rather than on screen, to create a layout and page that can be ‘touched’ before it is printed.

So what is this mysterious craft and previous form of printing? It was invented in the 15th Century by Gutenberg (for the first Bible) and was in wide use until the industrial revolution in the 19th Century. In it’s simplest form, the page is made up in a wooden frame, using raised metal letter blocks (in reverse). These can be typefaces in various sizes and weights, with additional kerning and leading added,  and could be along with images commissioned and made especially. This frame is then inserted into a special printing machine with the surface is ‘inked’ so that when the paper passes through the machine, the image is impressed onto the paper the right way around...

CHILTERN CAMPERS NEW VISUAL IDENTITY & WEBSITE

PIPPA SANDFORD WEBSITE REDESIGN

A business local to us in the same village of Pitstone came to us after a direct marketing campaign aimed a local start up businesses. They had just started a company to hire out vintage 1970's camper vans to holidaymakers wanting something a bit different.

We had some fun with this one, being inspired by 60s/70s design (a personal passion). We found the right fonts and images, played with a psychedelic logo and colour scheme all to fit a visual identity that fitted the company well, and was well placed to sit alongside it's competition.

We created the website and hosted it, along with a flyer design for the client to hand out at events and distribute at local amenities.

Pippa Sandford is a freelance medical and pharmaceutical translator who
came to us with the brief of updating her website.

We fulfilled the brief of creating a new visual identity that reflected Pippa's professionalism, experience and quality of work. Pippa was also keen to include imagery for the site that suggested what she did and was associated with the profession, but did not want it to be too obvious. We therefore came up with the notion of old fashioned drawings of medical equipment from a French medical text of the 1870s. This fitted perfectly as it captures one of the languages Pippa works in, the industry sector and the attention to detail she gives by default in her work. We also include an update to Pippa's live Twitter stream, which helps to keep the site up to date.
